In order to reduce excess agricultural output, there is a stronger policy push for developing domestic biofuel production capabilities in developing nations. However, industrial biotechnology has seen significant investment from both developed and developing nations, with a particular focus on second-generation biofuel production technologies using non-food raw materials.

In the chemical industry, sugar is regarded as a crucial feedstock because it can be used to make bioethanol and a variety of other fundamental chemical building blocks.

Role of Countries in Biotechnology

In developing nations, biotechnology has grown at an equally impressive rate. Brazil, China, Cuba, India, Singapore, South Korea, and South Africa are just a few of the nations that have made significant financial contributions and offered policy guidance for the growth of a domestic biotechnology industry. 

Even nations like Singapore and Korea have become international hubs for cutting edge stem cell research. Cuban biotechnology companies have increased their participation in joint ventures and other forms of cooperation with businesses in developing nations.

Cuban company Heber Biotech has formed a number of strategic alliances with businesses in Brazil, China, India, and South Africa.

It is impossible to overstate the significance of clusters in biotechnology. The foundation of biotechnology programs to promote national competitiveness appears to have been well-established and managed national public research institutions in agriculture, environment, mining, and human health in Europe, Japan, and the United States of America.

These include, among others, the Biovalley (France-German-Swiss border), West Havana Scientific Biopole, large and well-established technology clusters in New England and California in the United States, the Cape Town Biotechnology Cluster in South Africa. 

Role India in Biotechnology

This sector is one of india’s knowledge-based industries with the fastest growth rate is the biotechnology sector, which is anticipated to have a significant impact on the country’s rapidly evolving economy. The Indian biotech sector makes up about 2% of the global biotech market and is the world’s top producer of recombinant hepatitis b vaccine. India’s major accomplishments include the rotavirus vaccine, phytopharmaceuticals, cellulosic ethanol technology, plants created using indigenous technology, and the typhoid conjugate vaccine.

India ranks third in the Asia Pacific region and is one of the top 12 countries worldwide for biotech. With a GDP growth rate of more than 7%, India has one of the fastest growing major economies.

In 2005, India adopted the system of product patents. a sizable domestic market, along with a sizable consumer base and rising disposable income. India has the potential to produce a significant amount of genetically modified (GM) or engineered vegetables, including transgenic rice. There is a large and well-trained pool of talent in India.

A special-purpose organization like the Department of Biotechnology’s Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a public sector undertaking, helps the industry by providing funding, mentoring, hands-on assistance, and infrastructure support.

The import, packaging, and marketing of various biotech products have been a major source of income for biotech companies. In India, there are currently 500 companies involved in some aspect of biology and biotechnology. In comparison to its pharmaceuticals sector (which includes about 25,000 small and large drug manufacturers), India’s bio-industry is much smaller. Large pharmaceutical or agricultural companies house the majority of the major biotech activities.

For business owners, there are federally supported investment opportunities in bioincubators and biotech parks. Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore in Karnataka, Kalamassery and Kochi in Kerela, Guwahati in Assam, and Chindwara in Madhya Pradesh all have operational biotech parks.A wide range of instrumentation facilities and services are available at the 15 incubation centers that BIRAC has funded.

Indian Institutes of Bio-Technology

Five Indian Institutes of Technology have established a virtual center to develop cutting-edge biofuel technologies. Andhra Pradesh is creating the largest MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Asia, which will house about 200 independent manufacturing facilities. Bangalore (Bangalore Lifesciences cluster and Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre), NCR Faridabad, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai (Medtech) all have biotech industrial clusters.

AcE (Accelerating Entrepreneurs) Fund, an equity-based fund, has been established by BIRAC.

An equity fund to help entrepreneurs in the biotechnology sector grow by providing funding support of up to USD 150,000 for promising ventures

3000 additional start-ups will receive assistance from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).

Companies of India in Biotechnology

Piramal, Wockhardt, Ranbaxy, Lupin, Torrent, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, UB, Cadila, and RPG Life Sciences (drugs, agro, and nutrition) are Indian private sectors engaged in health biotech activities. Many multinational corporations, including GlaxoWellcome, Novartis, and Aventis, are growing their biotech business operations in India.

The majority of significant multinational corporations, including Glaxo, Wellcome, Novartis, AHPC, Monsanto, Aventis, DuPont, Pfizer, J&J, Bayer, and SmithKline Beecham, have subsidiaries in India. Leading businesses in the bio-agriculture sector include Unilever (HLL India), Pioneer, IAHS, AV Thomas, Rallis, Godrej, Mahindras, and PGS. Tata is thinking about launching new initiatives in high-tech fields like biotechnology and the life sciences.
